Selling a car involves several steps, but it’s straightforward in Western Australia. There are a few rules to follow, and they are generally easy to comply with.
First, we recommend getting a formal valuation. This helps you set a fair price for both you and the buyer. Take some clear photos to show the car’s condition.
Once you find a buyer, the next step is to complete the sale. Make sure to follow the legal requirements to keep the transaction safe and lawful.
Is a Roadworthiness Check Required?
Good news! In WA, car sellers don’t need to provide a roadworthiness check. The buyer is responsible for assessing whether the car is roadworthy.

What Documents Do You Need?
You must complete the transfer paperwork and send it to the Department of Transport (DoT). The main document is the car ownership transfer form.
For convenience, you can use DoTDirect to create an account and complete transfers online. You can also check vehicle registration and driver’s licences through this service. Alternatively, visit the Document Verification Services (DVS) Centre or contact a DoT agent.
You must notify the DoT within a week of selling your car to avoid penalties. Buyers must also notify the DoT within 14 days.
Essential Documents to Prepare
-
Vehicle Registration Certificate – Ensure it’s the latest copy and have extra copies.
-
Proof of Identity – Include your driver’s licence, car ownership proof, and other photo IDs. If someone sells the car on your behalf, they also need your ID copies.
-
Agreement – Not legally required, but helpful. Include your details, the buyer’s details, vehicle info, price, deposit, payment method, and transaction date. Mention any inclusions like a stereo system.
-
Receipt – Legally required for purchases over $75. Include buyer and seller names, date, and price.
-
Owner’s Manual – Give the manual to the new owner.
-
Warranty – If applicable, hand over any remaining warranty documents.
Transferring Ownership
Even without a roadworthiness check, you must inform the registration authority that you no longer own the car. Provide the buyer’s residential address and contact details. Verify their driver’s licence and make sure the information matches their ID.
Notify the DoT the same day to avoid penalties. Failing to do so could result in fines or demerit points if someone else drives the car.
When you get the MR9 change of ownership form, give the red copy to the buyer and keep the blue copy for yourself. Hand over the vehicle licence document and any other relevant papers. You can obtain these through DoTDirect.
If your car is eligible for a concession, inform the buyer. They must restore the vehicle licence to the full rate before driving it.
